Origin of Hizib Al Fatihah

The origin of Hizib Al Fatihah is unclear and disputed among scholars and practitioners. Some claim that it is a hizb taught by the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) to his cousin and son-in-law Sayyidina Ali (RA), who then passed it on to his followers. They cite various hadiths and narrations to support this view, such as the following:

The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said to Ali (RA): "O Ali, recite Surah Al-Fatihah and then say: Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (Alhamdulillahi Rabbil 'Alamin) Hayyu Ya Ya Ya Qoyyumu Ajib Ya Ruqiyaila until the end of Surah Al-Fatihah. Then blow on your hands and wipe them over your body. This is a hizb that will protect you from all evil and harm."

However, other scholars and practitioners reject this view and consider Hizib Al Fatihah to be a fabrication or innovation that has no basis in the Quran or Sunnah. They argue that the hadiths and narrations cited are weak, fabricated, or misinterpreted, and that the supplication itself contains words and phrases that are not found in the Quran or Sunnah, such as Hayyu Ya Ya Ya Qoyyumu Ajib Ya Ruqiyaila. They also point out that there are many other authentic hizbs and supplications that are sufficient and superior for healing, protection, and blessing, such as Ayatul Kursi, the four Quls, and the morning and evening adhkar.

Meaning of Hizib Al Fatihah

Hizib Al Fatihah consists of two parts: Surah Al-Fatihah and a specific supplication. Surah Al-Fatihah is the first chapter of the Quran and one of the most important and recited surahs in Islam. It is also known as Ummul Kitab (the Mother of the Book), As-Sab'ul Mathani (the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses), and Ash-Shifa' (the Cure). It contains praise and glorification of Allah, affirmation of His lordship and mercy, declaration of His oneness and worship, and supplication for guidance and help.

The specific supplication that follows Surah Al-Fatihah is as follows:

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (Alhamdulillahi Rabbil 'Alamin) Hayyu Ya Ya Ya Qoyyumu Ajib Ya Ruqiyaila (Ar-Rahmanirrahim) Hayyu Ya Ya Ya Qoyyumu Ajib Ya Ruqiyaila (Maliki Yawmid Din) Hayyu Ya Ya Ya Qoyyumu Ajib Ya Ruqiyaila (Iyyaka Na'budu Wa Iyyaka Nasta'in) Hayyu Ya Ya Ya Qoyyumu Ajib Ya Ruqiyaila (Ihdinas Siratal Mustaqim) Hayyu Ya Ya Ya Qoyyumu Ajib Ya Ruqiyaila (Siratal Ladhina An'amta 'Alaihim Ghairil Maghdubi 'Alaihim Wa Lad Dallin) Hayyu Ya Ya Ya Qoyyumu Ajib Ya Ruqiyaila (Amin) Hayyu Ya Ya Ya Qoyyumu Ajib Ya Ruqiyaila

The meaning of this supplication is as follows:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful (All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds) O Ever-Living, O O O Self-Sustaining, Answer O Healer (The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) O Ever-Living, O O O Self-Sustaining, Answer O Healer (The Master of the Day of Judgment) O Ever-Living, O O O Self-Sustaining, Answer O Healer (You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help) O Ever-Living, O O O Self-Sustaining, Answer O Healer (Guide us to the straight path) O Ever-Living, O O O Self-Sustaining, Answer O Healer (The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked Your anger or of those who are astray) O Ever-Living, O O O Self-Sustaining, Answer O Healer (Amen) O Ever-Living, O O O Self-Sustaining, Answer O Healer

The supplication is essentially a repetition of Surah Al-Fatihah with the addition of Hayyu Ya Ya Ya Qoyyumu Ajib Ya Ruqiyaila after each verse. Hayyu means "the Ever-Living", Ya means "O", Qoyyumu means "the Self-Sustaining", Ajib means "Answer", and Ruqiyaila means "Healer". The supplication is thus a call to Allah by His names and attributes of life, power, responsiveness, and healing.

Method of Hizib Al Fatihah

The method of Hizib Al Fatihah is simple and easy. It can be done at any time and place, but preferably after the obligatory prayers or in the morning and evening. The steps are as follows:

  • Make wudu (ablution) and face the qiblah (direction of the Ka'bah).

  • Recite Surah Al-Fatihah once.

  • Recite the specific supplication once.

  • Blow on your hands and wipe them over your body.

  • Repeat steps 2 to 4 for a total of seven times.

Some sources also recommend reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas (Qul Huwallahu Ahad) three times before and after Hizib Al Fatihah for extra protection and blessing.
